Billy R. Amburgey Obituary

Billy Ray Amburgey

June 17, 1949 – May 25, 2025

Billy Ray Amburgey passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 25, 2025, in Independence, Kentucky. He was born in Portland, Oregon, on June 17, 1949. Throughout his life, Bill lived in many places across the United States, including Chicago, Illinois; Hazard, Kentucky; Cincinnati, Ohio; and finally Independence, Kentucky.

Bill was a proud United States Marine and devoted family man whose life was marked by service, passion, and deep love for his family and country.

A veteran of the Vietnam War, Bill served his country honorably as a Marine, carrying with him the strength, loyalty, and pride of that service throughout his life. He was a true patriot who loved his country deeply.

Bill was a man of many passions. He found joy in antiquing at yard sales and flea markets, building music boxes, and lovingly restoring his prized 1957 Chevy. A lover of 1950s and 60s music, he often filled his days with the timeless tunes that brought him peace and joy. Above all, he loved God and carried a deep faith with him throughout his life, missing his beloved wife Donna Jean dearly after her passing.

He is survived by many dedicated and loving family members, including his daughter Donna "Shannon" Amburgey, son Billy Ray Amburgey Jr.; grandchildren Brianna Shoemaker (Coddy), Caylie, Steven, MacKenzie, Carson, and Emma Amburgey; and great-grandchildren Jackson /, Neveah, Mahlayah Amburgey, and Liam Robertson. He is also survived by his sister Jackie Miller, and beloved family members Arnold and Phyllis Wilson, and Eugene and Michelle Wilson, as well as countless other friends and family members whose lives are forever changed because of the example he set.

Bill is preceded in death by many cherished family and friends, including his wife Donna Jean, daughter Malissa, granddaughter Reagan Rose Amburgey, mother Allie Campbell, sisters Josephine Riley and Phyllis Thacker, brother Bobby Amburgey, and niece Jessica Wilson. He also held close in his heart the memory of his brothers-in-arms who never came home.

Bill's memory will live on through the stories, laughter, and love of those who knew him. His legacy of strength, kindness, and devotion will not be forgotten.
