James H Craft Obituary

James H. Craft, nearly 87, passed away quickly and peacefully at home on Tuesday evening.

At just eighteen, James began working at Ford Motor Company. Over the years, he rose through various roles and ultimately retired as a carpenter, helping to build and renovate the company’s main campus. He also served for a time as the maintenance supervisor at Pilot Truck Stop. James had a natural talent for working with his hands and a lifelong passion for woodworking. Among his many creations were handcrafted grandfather clocks, baskets, and whimsical whirligigs.

A long-time resident of Walton, Kentucky, James was a devoted member of Walton Baptist Church. He and his wife built their home there 55 years ago, where they raised three children in an atmosphere filled with love, structure, and faith. James was a quiet man, deeply committed to his values. He often expressed his faith not in words, but in how he lived—humbly and with integrity. His dry wit could light up a room, though he often preferred the peace and companionship of his wife to a large crowd.

Together, they cultivated a beautiful life. Their yard, lined with grafted apple, peach, and pear trees, looked like a page from a Home and Garden magazine. They spent time watching Gunsmoke or The Andy Griffith Show, and every morning began with James serving his wife coffee. Each night, he read from his well-worn New King James study Bible.

James was also a dedicated Boy Scout leader, proudly guiding his son all the way to Eagle Scout. A regular at Family’s Restaurant, he enjoyed coffee and conversation, affectionately known to the staff as “Youngin.” Music was another love of his—he played the guitar, a tradition passed down from his father, who also played string instruments.

James Craft lived a life rooted in love, faith, and simple joys. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Preceded in death by his parents; Willie and Martha Craft (Walker), his in-laws; Carlie and Flosie Boyatt (Davis), two brothers, and three sisters.

Surviving him is his wife of 66 years, Correane Craft (Boyatt), children; Annette (Jeff) Chapman, Teresa (Mike) Alexander, and David (Linda) Craft, sisters; Faye Higgenbotham and Sondra Clowers (LJ Young), thirteen grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, as well as many friends and extended family.
