Gary Allen Bishop Obituary

Gary Allen Bishop was born January 7, 1941, son of Allen and Stella Goldsberry Bishop. Allen succumbed to typhoid fever four months before Gary’s birth. As a young widow, Stella sought employment in Cincinnati. Baby Gary was left in the loving and nurturing care of his maternal grandparents, John L. and Nellie Goldsberry along with his surrogate dad, Uncle Johnny Goldsberry.


Gary Allen started school in the one room, Harris School. He graduated from Owen County High School in 1960 having served as Senior Class President.


He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Lynn Perkins on July 1, 1960. They had two sons; Stanley William and John Brete, and were blessed with a granddaughter; Sara Lynn Bishop. John passed away suddenly March 2021 from congestive heart failure.


Following high school graduation, Gary worked 42 years with Owen Rural Electric Cooperative. He started with REA while in school, working two summers. He retired in 2001 as Line Superintendent in the northern end for RECC.


Gary loved being on the farm working with his cattle, horses, and donkey. He was an avid hunter over the years. He enjoyed the old tv westerns, NASCAR, and all the sports on tv. His dog, Ol’ Blue Boy was a constant companion for some 16 years.


Gary passed after a long battle with AML Leukemia. He is survived by his wife; B. Lynn Bishop, son; Stanley William Bishop, granddaughter; Sara Lynn (Stephen Thacker) Bishop, step-grandson; Ryan Holbrook, Daughter-in-law; Tina Alsip Bishop, sister; Beverly Bell (Curtis) Smoot, niece; Aimee (John) Robinson, great nephew; Hayden McCoy, in-laws; Ann K. Siders, Betty Bishop, Sue (Roger) Ashcraft, Charlie (Joann) Perkins, as well as many other nieces, nephews, and close friends.


Preceded by his son; John Brete Bishop, his dog companion; Blue, parents, grandparents, Uncle Johnny (Deannie) Goldsberry, niece; Julie Smoot McCoy, step-sister; Nancy Bell Thompson, Stepfathers; James Bell and Lous Simpson. His mother and father-in-law; Anna Margaret and Stanley Perkins, and his brother-in-law; Donald Bishop.


A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 28th at the Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, 11382 Madison Pike, Independence KY 41051. Visitation will begin at 10:30am and the service will begin at 12:30pm. Entombment will be at Owenton Cemetery.


 


Memorials may be made in Gary’s honor to Yung Family Cancer Center, St. Elizabeth Hospital.
