Donna Lee Simmons (née Davis), age 80, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening after a brief illness. Though she lived for many years with Parkinson’s disease, Donna never let it dim her spirit or lessen the love she gave so freely. She will be remembered always for her unwavering devotion, strong will, and generous heart.
Born and raised in Taylor Mill, Kentucky, Donna was the beloved only child of Elmer and Helen Davis. A bright student, she graduated from Simon Kenton High School alongside her high school sweetheart and future husband, Joe Simmons. Donna began her professional life as an insurance agent, but it was in the roles of wife, mother, and later grandmother and great-grandmother, that her life truly blossomed.
Donna and Joe built a loving home together and were blessed with two children, Randy and Michelle. She embraced motherhood with joy and purpose—serving as a room mother, PTA president, and cheerleader through every ballet class, swim meet, and family dinner. Her days were full, and her heart even fuller.
Smart, beautiful, and full of life, Donna’s personality sparkled. She had a sharp aim in cornhole, earning her the nickname “Hot Donna,” and she knew every step of a good line dance. She especially loved dancing around the room with her daughter, while Joe watched with a smile. She had a curious mind, took pleasure in preparing taxes, and enjoyed exploring new technology—even later in life.
As “Grandma,” Donna’s world expanded with the joy of three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her life remained centered on family, and she created countless cherished memories: trips to the zoo, Coney Island, and Krohn Conservatory—always ending with a sweet treat of vanilla ice cream. Known for her sweet nature, she loved her Splenda and considered pepper to be spicy. Whether taking her grandkids shopping or joining them for “Take Your Child to Work Day,” Donna always made it an adventure. Sunday dinners were a special tradition—she dressed up for the occasion and welcomed everyone to a warm, well-prepared table.
Organized and thoughtful to the very end, Donna even planned her own 80th birthday celebration and wrote out her life story—a treasured gift for her family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Joe E. Simmons; her children, Randall Simmons and Michelle (Jerry) Blessing; grandchildren, Loren Fries, Joe (Betty) Simmons, Zackary (Jessie) Hahn, and Sophia Blessing; and great-grandchildren, Joe Simmons Jr., Sam Simmons, Anna Wagner, Evelyn Johnson, Jeremy Simmons, Meadow Simmons, Lorelai Butler, Tatiana Hatton, Kiona Hatton, and Oliver Johnson, and one great-great grandbaby; Dior Wilder.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, 11382 Madison Pike, Independence, KY 41051. Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM, with a service to follow at 12:30 PM. Donna will be laid to rest at Floral Hills Memorial Garden beside her infant daughter, Melissa.
