Steven Ray Lloyd, of Florence, KY, departed this life for his eternal one on September 14, 2025. Born on September 16, 1950, in Covington, KY, he was the son of the late J.C. Lloyd and Martha Powell Lloyd.
He met the woman he would wed at a bus stop in Covington. Steve and Judy Burkhart were married 48 years before her passing in 2018. From northern Kentucky, Steve’s family moved to southeast Ohio. His father in law's kin were originally from Harlan, KY, and so his father in law returned to work he was sure would provide for his family—he went to the mines for Peabody Coal. Steve followed the path hewn by his father in law and became a miner himself. He was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America. Steve was always one to speak his mind. In the 1970s and 80s he joined others and marched in Washington, DC to protest proposed cuts to benefits and to fight for the rights of miners and their families.
Ultimately, the mine closed. Steve started his own drywall company. It did well for a few years but then decided it was time to move back to KY. He found work at Valcom Enterprises as a drywall finisher. He retired from Valcom, but not before his own son could do the same as he did with his own father and work alongside one another. Steve leaves in his wake a legacy of back-breaking labor and hard work. And while work did occupy a significant portion of his life, it didn’t occupy it all. When he found the time, he was happy to be on the shores of a pond fishing for crappie, with his trusty hound tracking rabbits or in a stand hunting deer. Steve liked to relax with the comforts of home when he could. When he went out, he made fast friends with nearly anyone who would talk with him. You knew Steve truly cared for you if he picked on you. Steve treasured his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids above everything else.
Steve was the beloved Dad of Steven “Stevie” Ray Lloyd, Jr. (Cathy) and Shannon Lail (Adam). He was Pappaw to Becca, Allen, Megan, and Tyler and ol’ Pop to Easton, Beckett, Carter, Jordan, Naila and Saoirse as well as dear brother to Sheila Lloyd and Vivian Hall. Steve was preceded in death by his wife Judy Lloyd, his parents, his brothers Larry Lloyd and Roger Lloyd, as well as his sister Sherry Simpson.
Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another’s company, and honor Steve on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 10:00 AM until shortly before the funeral service at 12:00 PM. Directly following the funeral, Steve will be laid to rest at Union Rice Cemetery, Union, KY. Memorial gifts can be made directly to the family at services.
