James “Jim” Butler, 84, of Walton, Kentucky, has passed away. A devoted father, grandfather, and cherished community member to many, Jim lived a life rooted in service, humility, and gratitude.

Jim honorably served his country in the National Guard and Army Reserve, where he was both a sharpshooter and a cook. After his military service, he continued giving selflessly to his community as a firefighter with the Florence, Kentucky Fire Department, ultimately retiring as Assistant Chief. His commitment to public service didn’t end there; Jim later served as a board member for the Walton Fire Department, always eager to support the people and place he loved most.

Faith and family were at the center of who Jim was. He attended St. Joseph Mission with his loved ones and consistently led by example, showing care and love through quiet, steady action.

Jim found joy in traveling, whether far from home or just down the road. For him, every journey was less about the destination and more about the beauty, people, and moments along the way. He proudly visited each of the 50 continental states—some of them on his motorcycle alongside his brother Jerry—with Maine being his final state, where he delighted in its butter-rich seafood and scenic coastline. Among his many adventures, a trip to Ireland with all of his siblings remained one of his most treasured memories. Still, those who knew him best would say his favorite place in the world was always Walton, Kentucky.

A proud and patriotic man, Jim loved his country deeply. The song “My Old Kentucky Home” never failed to bring tears to his eyes. He was also a loyal University of Kentucky fan, catching every game, even during his time living in California.

A service to honor Jim’s life will be held on Sunday, November 30, at the Walton Fire Department at 12600 Towne Center Dr, Walton, KY 41094 beginning at 4:00 p.m. Family will receive guests for visitation from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider leaving a donation to Tunnels to Towers bly clicking here or to the Wounded Warrior Project by clicking here.

Preceding him in death are his parents; Frank and Gertrude Butler, siblings; Frank Butler, Celine Dempsey, Carol Hyland, Ronald Butler, and Billy Jo Butler.

Surviving him, his daughter; Barbara (Willy) Solis, grandsons; Alex (Rachel) Otto, Andres Solis, and Logan Foley, siblings; Trudy (Paul) Maxwell, Marilyn Haar, and Jerry (Kathy) Butler, many nieces and nephews, including Amy (David) Hincks- a special niece, neighbor, and friend, as well as many local friends and colleagues.

Jim Butler leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, pride, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who were blessed to know him.
