Donald Lee Payne, age 84, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025. He was born on April 19, 1941, in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up with the values that would later define his life…hard work, quiet strength, and loyalty to the people he loved.
A graduate of Central High School in Columbus, Don attended The Ohio State University for a semester before enlisting in the United States Navy. He faithfully served his country for eight years aboard the USS Bainbridge with the rank of Machinist Mate 2 (E-5) where he participated in 3 Vietnam Campaigns. His time in the Navy shaped his character, deepened his discipline, and instilled a sense of loyalty he carried throughout his life.
After his military service, Don returned home and began working alongside his mother at her daycare in Columbus, OH. It was there he met the love of his life, Linda, beginning a partnership that would span 54 years with amazing memories. Don later built a long and successful career in life insurance sales, where his honesty, determination, and care for others made him not just respected, but truly loved.
For 45 years, Don and his family made their home in London, Ohio, before settling in Florence, Kentucky, for the past five years. No matter where he lived, what defined him most was his character: an unmatched work ethic, a selfless heart that always put others first, and a witty, dry sense of humor.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Ethel Payne; his mother-in-law and father-in-law Richard and Rose Jenkins; his son, Ron Payne; and by his brother-in-law, Mike Spencer. He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Payne; his children, Jeff (Megan) Payne, Tim (Bonnie) Payne, Nikki (Kyle) Tackett, and DeeDee Myers; his daughter-in-law, Ashley Payne; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Barry and Donna Shrode; his sister-in-law, Vicki Spencer; along with 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A cremation has taken place and a memorial service to celebrate Don’s life will be held on Saturday, December 13, from 1-4 at the London Train Depot 134 S Main St., London, OH.
Don’s legacy is one of love, loyalty, and quiet strength. To know him was to be shaped by him—and his family will forever be grateful for the laughter and guidance.
