It is with a heavy spirit and a devoted heart that we announce the passing of Emma Jeanetta Colston, née Cummins, 99, of Decatur, Georgia.  Mrs. Colston passed peacefully at her residence with family by her bedside.  Born on August 3, 1926, in Bracken County, KY, she was the daughter of the late W.E. “Ed” Cummins and Mary Elizabeth Collier.  

 “Jeanette” as she was fondly known, was a beloved mother to her daughter, Verna Colston; a dear sister to Garnet Hutchinson, Sue Carolyn Hopperton, and Patricia E. McNay, and an aunt and great aunt. Preceding Jeanette in death is her husband, James Verner Colston; her parents; and siblings Margaret Fortner, Cecil Cummins, and Kenneth “Buster” Cummins.  

Jeanette met the man who would later be her husband through mutual friends in the community. She, Jim and their daughter Verna lived in Latonia, Kentucky, where she was active in volunteering at her daughter’s school district. Jeanette and the family moved to Georgia in 1964 for Jim’s employment. Jeanette went to work for Dekalb County School System in food service and remained for 25 years. She was a member of Scott Boulevard Baptist Church in Decatur, GA. 

Friends and family will gather to share memories, find solace in one another's company, and honor the legacy Jeanette leaves behind on Monday March 16, 2026 at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, 11382 Madison Pike, Independence, KY, 41051. A funeral service will commence at 11:00 AM. Directly following the funeral, Jeanetta will be laid to rest gently and comfortably at Independence Cemetery, 5358 Madison Pike, Independence, KY 41051.
