Obituary of John Richard Short

John Richard Short, 57, of Walton, KY, passed away enveloped in the love of family on June 30, 2023 at Owenton Healthcare & Rehabilitation, Owenton, KY.  

The son of the late Gola and Barbara [West] Short, John was born in Covington, KY on May 15, 1966.  John was a graduate of Boone County High School, Class of 1984.  He previously worked for Swan Florist in their greenhouses and was a member of New Banklick Baptist Church. Possessing an eclectic ear, John loved to listen to many different types of music. His collection spanned everything from Christian to Celtic to 80s hair metal. John enjoyed watching UK basketball as well as movies of all genres with his family. His all-time favorite films though were those within the Star Wars universe.  John expressed his creative side by building and painting models and constructing elaborate LEGO sets.  

With regards to others, John embodied LEGO’s motto in his life: “only the best is good enough.” He is remembered for being exceedingly generous, fun and kind in heart. He was a loving brother and was great with kids.  John took pride in and relished being a devoted uncle as well as a caring brother.  

John is preceded in death by his siblings Robert Short, Arnie Short, Lynda Van Tyle, Barbara Eubanks, and Gola James “Jim” Short; his parents; and his nephew Jimmy Pat.  

Those surviving to carry on and remember John’s quiet legacy are his sister in law Lynne Short (JoAnn McCaughan) and brother in law Mark Eubanks; beloved nieces and nephews Rhonda, Erica, Bobbie, Jennifer, Joey, Ryan, Christopher, Matthew, Reva, Brendan, Hailey, Brian, and Mike; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews, other close relatives and dear friends.  

John will be laid to rest by his family at Elk Spring Cemetery, Wayne County, Monticello, KY on Monday, July 10, 2023 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Short family.  The family would like to extend special thanks to Owenton Healthcare and Rehabilitation for taking such good care of him.
