Obituary of Merrel Robinson

Please share a memory of Merrel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with bittersweet emotion that we announce the passing of a beloved dad, “Papau,” and husband; Merrel Robinson, 84, of Ryland Heights, KY. He was born February 12, 1940 in Paintsville, KY, the son of the late William “Bill” and Mahalia Mae [Ramey] Robinson.

Merrel was a patient and principled man. A proud US Air Force veteran, he was stationed throughout Europe and served his country during the Cold War.  After his time in the service, Merrel returned to the Bluegrass state and attended Berea College, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree.  It was here that he met his bride and the love of his lifetime, Mary Frances Helton. Merrel’s career took the budding Robinson Family from Paintsville to the greater Cincinnati area.  He was first employed by NIOSH but then took a position as a research toxicologist with the Environmental Protection Agency.  It was from the EPA that Merrel retired after many years. A consummate outdoorsman, Merrel treasured hunting and fishing. He and Mary hiked, camped and traveled at every possible moment they could. Merrel grew green beans and tomatoes.  He kept a special strawberry patch just for his grandkids.  His hands were kept busy woodworking at the lathe in the garage, where he could be found making small bud vases or at his bench, creating bird feeders and birdhouses. He loved to pick for treasures at yard sales, antique sales and auctions.  These tremendous finds adorned the home he and Mary kept on the banks of the Licking River in Ryland Heights.  Together, they relished throwing parties for friends and loved ones or simply just taking in quiet moments on the back porch admiring the mimosa trees which enveloped the property.

Those surviving to carry on Merrel’s legacy are his sons, Brent (Sheri McGue) Robinson and Chad (Melissa) Robinson; beloved grandchildren Cody Robinson, Rene (Devonte “Buck”) Solomon, and Charlotte Robinson; as well as great-grandchild Asher Solomon.

Merrel was welcomed into heaven by his dear wife of 62 years, Mary Frances [Helton] Robinson and his parents William “Bill” and Mahalia Mae [Ramey] Robinson.
