Obituary of Elmer "Doc" Seng
Elmer Leroy Seng, 89, affectionately known to all as “Doc” passed peacefully surrounded by loving family at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Edgewood, KY on the morning of October 4, 2024. Born on February 16, 1935 in Crescent Springs, KY, he was the son of John Seng and Lucy [Marks] Seng.
Doc attended Dixie Heights High School. When he was in his 60s he completed a personal milestone by obtaining his GED. For many years, Doc was employed as a warehouse associate and forklift driver—first at White Villa Grocers and then at Levi Strauss & Co. Doc was a patient father figure and mentor to many who worked with him. Upon his retirement, there were many who were saddened to see him go but wished him well and continued to maintain contact through letters and cards over the years. Doc possessed an amazing memory. He enjoyed Reds baseball (especially the classic era of “The Big Red Machine”) and Browns football. He was often known to quote stats of both of his favorite teams to anyone who was watching or listening to the games with him. Often during these times and other moments of relaxation, he enjoyed a cigar or in his earlier years, some pipe tobacco.
Doc suffered the devastating loss of his first wife, Sue Ellen Seng. He was able to open his heart and love again, though. His family grew when he met Margaret “Margie” [Kohler] Smith, who had suffered the same loss as he. Together, they raised their four children. Doc converted to Catholicism and became a member All Saints Roman Catholic Church in Walton, KY. Doc and Margie nurtured their love and enjoyed creating a well-landscaped sanctuary at their country home in Crittenden. He and Margie faithfully prayed the rosary every evening along with Mother Angelic on EWTN. Doc and Margie were married for 52 years. Whether you called this special man husband, dad, uncle, grandpa, “GPA” or friend, it is without a doubt that he will be dearly missed.
We’re comforted to know that Doc is greeted in Heaven by Sue Ellen, his parents, all his siblings and his great-granddaughter Katelynn Dodd. Doc was the beloved husband of Margaret “Margie” Seng; dear dad to Patty Seng, Peg (Bob) Piccola, Cherie (Chuck) Emmons, and Doug (Patty) Smith; grandpa to 9 grandchildren and great-grandpa to 18 great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored. He was a precious uncle to many nieces and nephews as well as a treasured friend to so many.
A visitation and Mass of Christian Burial to honor Doc will be held privately at the convenience of the family at his home parish, All Saints Roman Catholic Church, 62 Needmore St, Walton, KY 41094. Doc will lovingly be laid to rest in a private ceremony celebrating the Rite of Committal at St. Patrick Cemetery, Verona, KY. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly urges you to instead make a memorial donation to St. Elizabeth Hospice online or by mailing a check to St. Elizabeth Foundation c/o Hospice Programs,1 Medical Village Drive, Edgewood, KY 41017. The next time you enjoy some M&Ms, licorice jellybeans, jelly donuts or any old-time candy, savor it and remember Doc.
