Obituary of George Whiteker
Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Rogers Whiteker was a proud and proper man.
"He was proud of being an honest individual and proud of his family. There were always proper manners at the table, never a cuss word. He was a quiet man, but a very proud and proper man," said his son, Mel Whiteker of Taylor Mill.
Mr. Whiteker, 93, of Independence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was a retired dairy, beef and tobacco farmer and a retired welder with General Electric.
Mr. Whiteker was born on a farm in Cynthiana and enjoyed farm life.
"But, during World War II, he migrated to Pascagoula, Miss., to build Liberty Ships for the war," said his son. "After the war, he migrated back to the farm."
Mr. Whiteker worked 26 years for General Electric as a welder.
But "he enjoyed farming more than welding," noted his son.
Mr. Whiteker was also an avid angler and reader.
"He was very well read and could talk to you about anything. He enjoyed people dropping by to talk," Mel Whiteker said.
"He was a family man and was proud that he got to hold his two great-great grandchildren."
Other survivors include his wife of 73 years, Agnes Scott Whiteker; sons, Jim Whiteker and Don Whiteker, both of Independence; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Memorials are suggested to Action Ministries, 4375 Boron Drive, Covington, Ky., 41015.
