At a family get-together, approximately two weeks ago, someone mentioned that Tammy Benge Smith was deceased, as of December 2013. This just did not seem possible and was very difficult to comprehend. Tammy had been a true friend during our high school years at Clay County High School. She was always easy to talk with and could relate to any problems. Not only was Tammy a great friend, but also her to-be husband of thirty-three years, Gary Smith, was the closest friend I had in high school. We both played basketball and our personalities were much the same - quiet.
After learning of Tammy's unfortunate death, I was left with an empty feeling even though I had not seen Tammy and Gary since before they were married. It was as if we were all still in high school and that bright spot that was Tammy's life, her dynamic personality, everything I remembered about our friendship, had suddenly disappeared.
To lose someone so filled with life and so beautiful in her entire being, is much more than a person can comprehend. Someday we will learn why Tammy, was chosen to be plucked from God's flock earlier in life than we would have expected. I feel sure that this deep sadness will remain a part of my life forever. It is difficult for me to know the depth of sadness that Gary and her children must be dealing with on a daily basis.
Tammy's brother, Robert and I attended Cumberland College at the same time and, he too is another family member that one simply hurts for in his tremendous loss of a close sister. In fact, I wish to extend my condolences to Tammy's entire family, her students and friends, since I feel sure she will be missed by so many.

I had Ms Smith every year from 7th through 12th grades, the only teacher I can say that about. For all of High School, I had her every day. 11th grade, I had her twice a day, since she also doubled as the Yearbook advisor. Would I be an artist today without her? Maybe. But I think its safe to say I wouldn't be the same artist, nor as good an artist. Every time I put pen or pencil to paper, her hand is there, a little bit. She laid the foundations that I built on. Am I a Great Artist today? No, but I am a good one, and her daily classes, her daily attention is in large part responsible for that. And she never knew it. She never knew how much she touched me, how much she affected the course of my life. I wish I could tell her. I hope that maybe somehow she knows. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. She will be missed so much.

To the family of Tammy Smith, Please know how much I enjoyed working with Tammy at Ludlow in the 90's. I was a middle school English teacher, but I saw and spoke with her often. She was a calming, kind presence not just for her students, but also for the staff. She always noticed and acknowledged the positive in everyone. I was new to Ludlow, and she made me feel welcome and accepted. I wish I would've thanked her and let her know how special she was to me. I'm sure she touched many young lives and we were all blessed to have her as a fellow teacher and friend. Sending prayers and blessings to you! Sincerely, Amy Pendery

Gary, Travis and Kayla--our hearts are breaking for you all; Tammy was the kind of friend that comes along rarely in this life; a kind hearted, always smiling and person you wanted to strive to be like. She has left a huge hole in our lives that can never be filled, but even as we mourn, we look forward to knowing we will see her again in heaven one day. We will treasure the many sweet memories we have of her, and are so blessed to have called her our dear friend. Much love and sympathy to all of you Jim, Lisa, Shelby and Dylan Graham
