Salome "Sally" Amistoso Adams, 84, of Independence, passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at her residence.
Sally was born in Manila, Philippines, and survived the Japanese occupation during WWII where she witnessed the atrocities by Imperial Japanese forces at Santo Tomas Interment Camp. As a young teenager, she and her friends would throw food over the compound fence to help the starving American and Filipino internees, risking her own life as the Japanese would punish this with death. While fleeing an artillery attack from Japanese Imperial forces in the Manila Massacre, 15 yr. old Sally was wounded and was able to escape till finally reaching American forces where her wound was eventually treated on a US Naval ship. After the war she graduated from the University of the Philippines and began working as a secretary for the US Military in the Philippines and later in Okinawa, Japan.
The eldest of five, she willingly contributed her earnings to support her mother, siblings, aunts and uncles. In Okinawa she married her late husband Warren G. Adams who was also working in the buildup of US military bases there. Together they moved to the United States and lived in several states before finally settling in Northern Kentucky. She retired from US Shoe Corp. after working in the paralegal office for 15+ years and in 2000 received her Bachelor degree in English from Northern Kentucky University. Sally was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Barbara Church. She was an avid golfer up to her death and loved playing tennis in her younger years.
Sally is preceded in death by her parents Igmidio and Dioscora Amistoso (Cabada) and husband Warren G. Adams. She is survived by her daughter Kathleen Adams of Independence; sons Daniel of Pulaski, TN, Michael (Terese) of Linden, MI, Richard (Lisan) of East Dubuque, IL; sisters Timotea Amistoso of Hayward, CA, Nicisima Amistoso of Manila, Philippines, Sora Domingo of Oahu, HI; brother Eusebio Amistoso of Manila, Philippines; grandchildren David, Jessica, Reed, and Leiah Adams.
