Obituary of Jim Filer

Jim Filer was born October 13, 1941 in Covington, KY he passed away Thursday, April 21st at 12:40 a.m. at the age of 74 in his home with his family surrounding him. He was preceded in death by his Father LeRoy Filer, his mother Phyllis Shell and his younger brother Phillip Wayne Filer. He spent 10 years in the Navy as a Communication Technician 1st Class. He graduated 1st in his class for Serbo-Croatian and 2nd in class for Russian. He also won the Maxwell D. Taylor award. After the Navy, he spent 30 years on the L&N/CSX Railroad. He retired at 63 and went to work for River Ridge Elementary School where he worked in Special Education. After 12 years, he retired and then spent the rest of his years subbing at Community Christian Academy. He poured his whole heart in to whatever he did, and when he turned his life over to the Lord he gave everything to help people in need. He looked beyond people's circumstances and saw what they could be in Christ. His love was for the hurting especially for children and youth, he spent 15 years ministering at the Juvenile Detention Center and 15 years at the Fairhaven Rescue Mission.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years Beth Filer. Daughters Brenda Beers (Mark) of Covington, KY, Jamie Patterson (Steve) of Lexington, KY and Melissa Wilson (Mark) of Independence, KY. 6 grandchildren, 4 adopted by heart grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, that he was extremely proud of. His sister Peggy Godman of Dania Beach, Florida and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Community Family Church on Monday April 25th, 2016. Visitation will be from 3-5 PM with the funeral service beginning at 5 PM.
