Obituary of Quentin Nelson

Quentin Emerson Nelson 87 of Richwood, KY, formerly of Covington, GA, passed away Friday September 30, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Hospice, Edgewood. He was born in Lovington, IL, on Jan. 8, 1929, to Jesse and Etta (Johnson) Nelson. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Virgie; dear son Byron; sisters, Ruth Meggers, Lee Etta Redfern and Wilma Frost; and brothers, Bob and Tom Nelson. Quentin is survived by his daughter-in-law, Loretta Nelson; grandson Jeff (Kristi) Nelson and great granddaughter, Emery Nelson of Union, KY; son, Lynn (Dot) Nelson of VA, grandson Harold Nelson and a great granddaughter, and great grandson; and his brother, Dean Nelson of CA. Quentin retired from the Gates Rubber Co. after 40 years of loyal service. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. Quentin was an avid UK fan, and followed Big Blue football and basketball for many years. He was also a fan of the Waffle House and the staff there was certainly fans of Quent! In addition, he enjoyed golf and wood-working, but his volunteer work for the Salvation Army was dear to his heart. As a HAM radio operator, he served as a coordinator for the Salvation Army Atlanta disaster-relief services for many years. He helped on-site with the Mexico City and Guatemala earthquake disasters. His radio room in his home in Georgia was command central for countless Salvation Army disaster relief communications. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erlanger, KY. Memorials if desired are suggested to: The Salvation Army Disaster Services, 1424 Northeast Expressway, Atlanta, GA. 30329-2088.
