As part of our team for only two short years, you made a grand impression. Intelligent, caring, inclusive of all, enthusiastic, positive, well-spoken - a great SSC. You have left a hole in our hearts and you will be missed, but never forgotten.

Greg worked with me in our Northeast Florida Protected Resources Division Field Office. After a short stint of one year as my office mate, he was called to assist the Admiral in Silver Spring. I was sorry to see Greg go, but when duty called, Greg answered -and off he went. One day a few months after Greg's departure, I was working alone in my office and I received a text message. It was from Greg. "I'm sitting two chairs down from Dr. Lubchenco!!" his message said (Dr. Lubchenco was the NOAA Administrator back then). In my mind, I envisioned Greg sitting proudly in a crisp uniform and I was reminded that, oh yeah, he was contemplating all the things he could do prior to moving to Silver Spring so that he could make a good impression on everyone. I texted Greg back, with admittedly a sly smile on my face: "prove it." I didn't hear back from him immediately, so I immersed myself back in my work. A few hours later, I received another message from Greg -this time it was a photo. No text, just a photo. The photo was of Greg standing next to a photo of Dr. Lubchenco. I laughed and called Greg. "That doesn't count, bud!" I said to him. Greg proceeded to tell me that for the rest of the meeting/event he was agonizing over how to get a photo of him sitting next to Dr. Lubchenco. He said he tried holding his cell phone underneath his crossed leg while pointing the camera in her direction, tried pretending to stretch with his hand reaching back behind is head, and a number of things. Oh man, did we laugh -like we always did when we worked together in Fernandina Beach. Then, in another year or so, I received another message from Greg on my cell phone. This, too, was a photo -and, again, no text. It was a photo of Greg standing next to Dr. Lubchenco... I smiled and our photo/texting competition was off and running. My last message to Greg was a photo of Dr. Kathy Sullivan, our current NOAA Administrator, and me. I followed up with "and she's walked in space!" Somehow I'm thinking that if I received a text from Greg now, the photo would far surpass anything I could produce.

Greg is an awesome shipmate, co-worker, and friend. As much as he will be missed by all of us, the greatest loss will be felt by his beloved children and wife. We're without the blessing of having meet his crew, but he always had photos of his family ready to brag. We hope that you can find peace in this difficult and confusing time.

On behalf of the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Regional Office Protected Resources Division, I extend our sincere condolences to Greg’s family. Greg made a profound impact on us, our conservation efforts, and the extended marine mammal conservation community. He inspired us, impressed us, made us laugh, and motivated us to be better people. Greg was dedicated to his career and his family; on some occasions, such as the Right Whale Festival, these worlds would cross and Greg would truly shine. We are saddened by Greg’s passing, but forever changed from of his presence. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I had the honor of serving with Greg on the NOAA Ship Henry B Bigelow. He assumed the unofficial duties of morale officer which we all needed during the long 33 day cruise to the Mid Atlantic Ridge. He came up with the idea of having a ship Olympics contest, and setting up a "pirate bar" on the 0-2 deck, playing only Toby Keith (or that's what it sounded like to me!) He was a great shipmate and I am so saddened to hear of his passing. May God continue to bless Shauna and the kids and guide them through this time.

Staff with Environment and Climate Change Canada - National Environmental Emergencies Center are deeply saddened by the news of Greg’s passing. Several of us had the opportunity to have worked with Greg during cross-border responses and spill preparedness activities. Greg will be remembered as a highly professional individual, a story-teller, a warm and compassionate person always willing to help, teach or transfer his knowledge and experiences. His knowledge and resourcefulness in the oil spill response business made him the “Go-to guy”. He will be greatly missed in this side of the border. To the family and friends, please accept our sincere condolences. We hope our prayers and thoughts will ease the pain of your loss during this difficult time.

It was my pleasure to have worked with Greg as both a colleague SSC and as a manager. He always displayed confidence and a welcoming attitude. He taught a class for us on cold-water survival, and due to his personality and professional manner he made us all more prepared for such contingencies. He made great inroads in his AOR for our organization. He will be deeply missed and impossible to replace.... My sincerest condolences go out to his family and other friends.

As a colleague of Greg's at his most recent tour in NOAA Office of Response & Restoration, I can say all of us are deeply saddened to lose such an enthusiastic, cheerful, and capable soul. Greg was such a positive influence on so many during his too-short time on earth. Sent with deepest sympathy.

My deepest condolences for this tragic loss of a good man and a friend. Greg was an immediate brother. Although we hadn't known one another long, it seemed like we had known each other for years. Greg was unique in his ability to connect with people. Having worked with him on response, I witnessed the ease with which he gained others trust and confidence. I started out thinking I would try to help him learn a thing or two, only to be taking lessons from him in short order. I can honestly say that I would have done anything for him and I know he would have done the same. My prayers are with you

My thoughts are with all of you during this incredibly difficult time. I knew Greg through his travels as Flag Lieutenant. Although I didn't know him well, I have a very pleasant memory of speaking with Greg at a dinner event in Newport Oregon. Greg must have sensed that I was uncomfortable at such a large formal gathering (I was) because he came right over to start a conversation. While I don't remember the topic, it didn't matter; Greg's genuinely warm and welcoming personality made all the difference. He was a fine officer with a heart of gold. Sending much love to his family and friends. Greg will be sorely missed by all of us.

Like Charlene, I had the pleasure of getting to know Greg in our training class. Greg was unanimously elected our class president because no one could have done the job as well as he did. He always lit up the room with his positive and encouraging attitude, and was always looking out for us new/inexperienced officers. Greg will be sorely missed by his family, his friends, and all of his shipmates. My prayers are with you all.

Greg was a great guy. I didn't know him well but ran into him a lot while I was in DC. He was such a fun guy to be around. I have a terrible time in big groups and meetings. I hated going to them. He had a knack of making people feel welcome and including people. I really appreciated that. My deepest condolences to the family.

Although I was only around Greg a few times while visiting my Husband while he worked on The Oscar Dyson, Greg was always so genuinely nice, and he would light up when speaking about his family the times we all went to dinner. It was clear that he loved his family so much. Also, I know he was an outstanding Officer, and a good friend to those fortunate enough to know him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
