Obituary of Robert McCurley

Robert A. McCurley, age 99 of Florence died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at his home. He was born November 13, 1911 in Logan, Iowa. He was the fourth of five children born to Roland McCurley and Maude (Overman) McCurley, and was preceded in death by all of his siblings. Robert graduated from Logan High School in 1929 and farmed with his brothers in Harrison County until 1936, when he married Doris Whannell of Missouri Valley. Robert and Doris then farmed north of Minden, Iowa. They had three children, Hugh (Kathleen) McCurley, Roger (Janis) McCurley, and Amy (Michael) Baluchi. The family moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1953 and remained there until Robert's retirement. Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years and his daughter, Amy. He is survived by his two sons, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Robert enjoyed many hobbies; he was an avid reader and sports fan. But his greatest love was golf, and he was an accomplished golfer and golf coach until his later years. Robert and Doris were both members of Faith Community United Methodist Church of Independence, KY. Visitation will be from 10 AM until 11 AM, Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home of Florence. Funeral Service will be at 11 AM also at the Funeral Home.
