Rev. Harmon was minister for 56 years
Rev. Jasper "J.B." Harmon was a minister for 56 years and didn't leave the pulpit until age 90.
"He said he had the calling from God to be a minister," said Rev. Harmon's daughter, Betty Greiman of North College Hill, Ohio. "He was 100 percent devoted to his profession."
Rev. Harmon, 94, of Elsmere, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He became a minister in 1945, initially doing mission work in the Appalachian area of Kentucky while a student at Asbury College in Wilmore.
Rev. Harmon was a United Methodist minister at churches in Butler, Minerva, Raceland, Dayton, Williamstown, Epworth, Oakland and Ryland Heights.
After mandatory retirement as a Methodist minister at age 70 in 1981, Rev. Harmon was a part-time minister at non-denominational churches for the next 20 years.
"He was always there for the members of his church," said Mrs. Greiman. "He was an extremely friendly person and had lots of friends."
Rev. Harmon's hobbies were fishing and traveling. He especially enjoyed fishing in Florida and visiting the western part of the United States. He and his late wife, Mary Rowlett Harmon, traveled with two other couples throughout America.
Other survivors include sons, Bob Harmon of Cincinnati, Fred Harmon of Walton and Bill Harmon of Independence; a daughter, Donna Henry of Independence; 20 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
