Obituary of Lena Mae Shields
Lena Mae Shields (née Tomlin), age 88, passed away suddenly on December 31, 2020 at home. She was born in Covington, KY on December 24, 1932 to the late Elmer and Edna Tomlin (née Mardis).
Lena retired after 22 years in sales from Sears. She enjoyed a good game of euchre and she loved to dance (winning many contests even in her later years). She was often the “engine” of the “Locomotion” conga line, drawing others onto the dancefloor. Lena loved listening to the music of Elvis Presley and old-time rock and roll. Being a Christmas Eve baby herself, Lena adored the holiday season and decorated every room in her house each year. Most of all though, Lena loved spending time with her family.
Preceding Lena in death was her beloved husband Virgil Shields; brother Homer Tomlin; and sons Nelson Shields and Gregory Allen Shields. Those surviving to carry on Lena’s legacy include her children Randall (Sharon) Shields, Steve Shields (Loraine Grueter), Brenda Shields, and Keith Shields; brother Wayne Tomlin (Debbie), nine grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren; in addition to an abundance of other close relatives and friends.
A visitation celebrating Lena’s life will take place from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, 11382 Madison Pike, Independence, KY 41051. A funeral service be held the following morning on Wednesday January 6, 2021 at the funeral home at 11:00 AM. Lena will then be reunited with her husband and laid to rest at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, 5336 Old Taylor Mill Rd, Covington, KY 41015. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, face masks are required, social distancing is encouraged, and 50% capacity will be limited at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Lena’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
