Obituary of Frederick Horace Shepard
Frederick Horace Shepard, age 90, a much-loved father, grandfather, husband and uncle, departed Earth on June 20, 2021 at Gallatin Nursing and Rehab enveloped in the love of family and friends.
Fred was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 16, 1930 to the late Wilber “Bill” and Dixie Shepard (née Kidwell). Fred worked hard throughout many jobs in his life. From butcher to painter to construction to all around handyman to working for Hale - Justis Drug Company, it seemed there wasn’t much of anything that Fred couldn’t learn and master. He was a proud World War II veteran in the Army Occupational Forces. Possessing an incredible mind for the technical from an early age, Fred is most remembered as a mechanic, having retired from that role for Redken Labs/ L’Oreal after many years of dedicated service.
Fred was very generous with his talents and when he wasn’t working on his home or car he was helping others out with theirs. Although free time was something of a foreign concept to him, Fred did greatly enjoy hunting, fishing, and watching classic movies (most notably, westerns). He loved country cooking and sweets, especially pies. He was never without a cup of black coffee. Above all, those who knew Fred will recall that he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Dixie, his sister Ginger, his sons Steven and Dale Shepard, and granddaughter Amy Williams Matalka.
Surviving to carry on his legacy are his loving wife of 70 years, Doris Shepard; children Rebecca (David) Williams, Sharon (Don) Payton, Mark Shepard, Brian Shepard, Gina (Mike) Vagedes; grandchildren Scott Williams, Erin Rademaker, Eric Chester, Kelly Preston, Nicole Mangus, Stephen Shepard, Tess Payton, Ashley Miller, Joe Payton, and Emily Shepard; along with many great-grandchildren, close relatives and friends.
In keeping with Fred’s wishes, he will be cremated.
