Lanny Childers

Obituary of Lanny Maurice Childers

Please share a memory of Lanny to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Lanny Maurice Childers of Independence, age 80, passed away into the loving arms of his Savior at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Edgewood, KY on June 14, 2022. He was born to Othel and Daisy [Freeman] Childers on November 15, 1941 in Smithtown, KY. He was named after his mother’s favorite singer Lanny Ross and the foreman of the coal mine where his dad worked. Lanny graduated from McCreary County High School in 1959, maintaining a close-knit group of classmates and friends until the time of his death.  Possessing a sharp wit and a sarcastic sense of humor, Lanny was the family cut-up. He was famous for his one-liners and quick comebacks, forever the card. He lovingly teased and joked with all those he cared for. Lanny was a man of deep faith. He was a longtime member of Newport Pentecostal Holiness Church.  A favorite song of Lanny’s was Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere, Man.” Maybe that’s because he himself, had also been everywhere. A teamster truck driver for many years, he was most recently employed and retired from Castellini Company. He did everything to provide for his family, even when times were the toughest and ends needed to be met.  He enjoyed working on classic cars and trucks and going to shows.  Most of all though, Lanny treasured being a devoted husband, dad and “Paps” to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish the loving memory of Lanny are his wife of 58 years and love of his life Lillie “Mae” Childers, children Lanny Allan Childers (Bobbie) and Kathy “Kat” Brown (Lawrence Hopper); brother Richard E. Childers; grandchildren Amanda, Bradley, Chelsie, Clayton, Laney; great-grandchildren Jackson, Kayleah, Luke, Wes, Ellie, Winston, and Willow Mae as well as many other close relatives, friends and co-workers. Lanny was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers Larry Dwight Childers and Billy James Childers.

Visitation will be held at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, 11382 Madison Pike, Independence, KY 41051 on Monday, June 20, 2022.  The family will receive guests from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM.
