Obituary of Mary Jayne Volz

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Mary Jayne Volz of Florence, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2023, at St. Elizabeth healthcare in Edgewood, KY. She was born on December 3, 1941, in Covington, KY to the late Joseph and Lenora Michels. Jayne dedicated many years of her life to the St. Elizabeth Cancer Clinic as a volunteer. Not one for idle hands, Jayne enjoyed many activities that brought her joy. She loved to solve jigsaw puzzles, do ceramics, sew quilts, and garden. She would purchase dolls, sew clothes for them, and donate them to children in need at Christmas.

She began taking art classes later in life and you would often find her painting in the bright, sunny room she had built just for that purpose. Much of her artwork can be found today in Lexington’s St. Joseph Cancer Center where patients sign the paintings to celebrate the completion of their radiation therapy. She had a giving, caring spirit that blessed many people.

Jayne is well known for her homemade carrot cake that many say rivals what you would find in the finest restaurants. Her famous onion chip dip was an addictive snack. No matter how big the bowl, it was always polished off. She had a caretaker’s heart and was very giving of her time, especially with her grandkids. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who has left her family with beautiful memories that will be cherished forever.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Tommy Michels; beloved aunt, Bertha Hitch; cousins, Kenny Hitch and Don Hitch; her nephew, Michael Michels; and good friends Bud and Ceil Schrage. Many of these she lovingly cared for until they were called to their eternal home.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Thomas Volz; children, Allen (Lisa) Volz, John (Angie) Volz, Julie (Robert) Fuller; beloved grandchildren, Paige (Shaun) Watson, Max (Courtney) Fuller, Zach Volz, Serena Fuller, Kate Lawson, Mark (Gracie) Lawson, Luke Lawson, and Jared Volz; great-granddaughters, Ava Watson and McKenna Jayne Watson (born May 23, 2023); as well as many friends and relatives who will miss her deeply.

A visitation will be held on Monday, May 29, 2023, from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at St. Timothy Parish, 10272 U.S. 42 Union, KY 41091. The funeral mass will begin at 2:00 PM at the church.
