I will always remember Brian as the person who could fill a room with his infectious laughter and positive energy. He was full of life. I met him during our years at NDSU. I think he was the first person I ever met that liked techno music and he loved to share that dancing energy with others. Music, Christmas light tours, and many fun nights with friends. We will never forget him. Our hearts break for the whole family and we send our prayers for strength.

I write this with both sorrow and fond memories of Brian, a warm, free spirited, intelligent colleague and friend. His contribution to my life cannot be measured except in adding a smile and relief every time I spoke to him. There was no crisis that was too big when you spoke to Brian. His smile brought joy and hope and energy and you knew that the next steps were together with him alongside. He was always willing to go the extra mile in supporting a request, personal or work related. I am honored to know of his family, his friends and of all the communities that he touched and will co tiniest to touch in spirit. To the Hokkanen family, please know that you will all be our prayers.Peace, Hansel Ramathal

Ellen, Penny and Theo,
My deepest condolences to you and the whole family. Please let me know if anything I can possibly help with in this extremely difficult time.
Brian and I met each other in Houston back in 2012 as we worked together. At that time, we were both kids-free and had more time to hang out. It's always fun to talk with Brian about life at work and outside work. Later, Brian and I both moved to Kentucky, still working together and starting to grow our families. That brought more shared topics to us. The games, the drinks, the mosquitos in Minnesota and for sure our kids and families. Fun time. Brian always had his signature smile on him and every min we had together was enjoyable. I can't believe that he is not with us anymore.
To a great friend, a loving husband, father, son, brother and more, rest in peace, Brian...

I recall Brian fondly for his sincerity, his kind personality, but mostly for his loud & infectious laughter. Although we didn’t spend a lot of time together, Brian was one of those people who left a strong and positive impression upon me. He was a good friend and associate. We chatted just so recently about the next step in his professional journey, that this tragic news is still difficult to believe. Ellen: the children and you are in my thoughts. You have my support, always, from the other side of the world.

We will miss seeing Brian outside on the back patio playing with his adorable children or mowing the grass in his flip flops. He loved his family and was always so kind. Brian was super smart and because he had a helping heart, he tried teaching our son how to complete the Rubik's cube. I know he will be greatly missed by so many.
Prayers to his family,
Mathew, Julie, Jacob, Josh and Ayri Line

Memories of Brian:
Brian was a good friend to have over our four years at NDSU. He always kept a balance between staying dedicated as a student, and not taking all of the demands cooked up by the Chemistry professors too seriously. He was helpful as a classmate and always made sure that the valuable time away from course work was well used. Whether we were commiserating about classes at Thirsty Thursday or he was dragging me along as a co-performer to do a half thought out lip synch in front of a large crowd at a talent show, Brian was almost always a central part of what made my college years a time to remember in their own right rather than grueling preparation for the next chapter. The right quip from Brian could take the edge off the most demanding of lab assignments or test preparation. When we traveled for conferences his outgoing nature made meeting people and exploring new cities much better than would have been the case, even when I include that one time I should have been more insistent that 20 year old Brian playing a card on the street with a random person in San Diego was a bit too outgoing.
It’s hard to explain how much joy Brian brought to those four years of my life, and many key moments in the years that followed when we were able to get together. I offer my deepest condolences to the Hokkanen family in this time.

Ellen, Penny, and Theo,
The world lost a great man and an amazing father. My prayers are with your and your family.
I remember Brian proudly carrying Theo on his shoulders throughout the Kroger grocery store. I can't go into Kroger now without Caleb asking me to put him on his head and carry him through the store. Brian also opened our eyes to what my kids now call the "city" in the basement of the History museum...a must-see any time we go now. Finally, I remember debating the finer points of JMU vs. North Dakota State football during St. Paul fish fry season. I am a better person for knowing Brian. Rest in peace.

Dear Hokkanen family,
Please accept my sincere condolences.
For the last 6 years Brian has been a co-worker and friend. His positive mind-set and enthusiasm always made me enjoy meetings with him. Almost every week Brian and I found time to chat, to support each other, (if needed) to complain and at the end to feel good about our conversation. Brian will always be in my thoughts.

My deepest condolences to the Hokkanen family and I wish them much strength during these difficult times. During my 7 month stay in the United States, I was fortunate to meet Brian several times. Whenever he came to Auburn Hills, we went out for dinner and had a very fun evening over a drink or two. I always found Brian to be a very competent, courteous, helpful and fun colleague who was always a pleasure to work with and it is surreal to me that he is now no longer with us.
Rest in peace, Brian.

My deepest sympathies and condolences to the Hokkanen family. Brian was such a pleasure to work with and always smiling, always happy and full of energy. He will be sorely missed by many, many people. Any time I have a bourbon or whiskey, I will think of Brian - we were just getting to know each other pretty well at Celanese, and he was teaching me the finer aspects of bourbon and whiskey. He loved his family and loved his job and I consider myself privileged to have been his friend, if only for a short time (a year or so).
