Obituary of Tom Spurlock
Tom Spurlock, 91, of Independence, KY, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at home surrounded by his loving family. The son of the late Howard and Effie {Valance} Spurlock, Tom was born in Big Creek, KY, on December 11, 1931. Tom served in the United States Army during the Korean War and retired from United Steel Workers after 25 years of service. He was a member and Deacon of Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Covington for over 60 years. Tom was a former Education Coordinator for the University of Indiana, he taught Labor & Law at the Northern Kentucky University and was once the Vice President of the Cincinnati Labor Council. He enjoyed attending steel workers conventions and traveling with his wife after retirement.
He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 74 years, Lucy Spurlock; son Gareth (Shauna) Spurlock; daughter Patricia (John) Asalon; grandchildren Stephen (Erin Vickers) Spurlock and Kaitlin (Daniel) Clasing; great-grandson Mason Patrick Clasing; and brothers Wiley Spurlock and Howard Spurlock.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his sisters Helen Napier, Oma Gamble, Irene Bowling, and Opal Lamb; and brothers Lloyd Spurlock, Farmer Spurlock, and James Watt Spurlock.
A visitation will be held between 11 AM and 12 PM with the funeral service to immediately follow at 12 PM on Monday, November 6th at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 6056 Taylor Mill Rd. Covington, KY, 41015. Tom will be laid to rest at Independence Cemetery where military rites will be held.
