Obituary of Coreta Rice Cheesman

Coreta Fae [Rice] Cheesman, 89, of Walton, KY, passed away at Boonespring Skilled Nursing in Union, KY on December 11, 2023.

Coreta was a lifelong resident of Walton, born and raised there to Ward Rice and Mildred Young on January 17, 1934.  Possessing a deep faith, she was not only a member of Walton Christian Church but also active in the BYKOTA Sunday School. She delighted in cooking and worked for a time at Procter & Gamble.  However, Coreta’s life’s passion and purpose was caring for children. Her family recalls “she babysat nearly all of Walton” at the day care she ran out of her own home. She completely and totally embodied the Christian ideal of what a loving maternal figure could be and while she devoted an immense amount of time tending and watching over the kids in her community; she especially relished time with her own family. She utterly adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This beloved mom and grandmommie will be eternally missed here on Earth.  

Preceding her in death are husband of 59 years, Olan “Layne” Cheesman; son Callen Cheesman; as well as her parents. Those left to carry on Coreta’s love and light are her children Layna Feagan (J.R.), Dr. Dayna Mohammadione (Ali), Jayna Cheesman, and Mary Ganzel (Steve); daughter-in-law Kimberly Cheesman; grandchildren Abe Mohammadione (Emily), Leila Mohammadione (Jeremy); Nick Feagan (Michelle), Armon Mohammadione (Torie), Ashley Gabbard (Mikey), Braden Cheesman (Megan) and her great-grandchildren Jeila, Elora, Kyleigh, Callie, Cannon, Charlotte, Caelyn, Armon and Nellie.

A visitation will be held at Coreta’s home church, Walton Christian Church (50 South Main Street, Walton, KY, 41094) on Saturday December 16, 2023 from 10:00 AM until shortly before the funeral service at 1:00 PM.  Directly following the services at church, Coreta will be laid to rest near her beloved Layne and Callen at Richwood Cemetery, 1070 Richwood Road Walton, KY 41094.
