Obituary of Martin Nie

Martin William Nie, age 79, of Independence, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at St. Elizabeth Hospice in Ft. Thomas. He was the former owner of Nie's Pharmacy in Independence and an active member of St. Cecilia Parish. Marty was a member of the K.P.H.A. (KY Pharmacists Association), the N.K.P.A. (Northern KY Pharmacists Association),the A.P.S.C. (American Pharmacy Services Corporation), the Veteran Apothecary Association of Cincinnati, and served two terms on the KY Board of Pharmacy. Marty was also very active in the Independence community, serving as the former Commander and Chaplain for the Independence American Legion Moon Brothers Post #275 and a member of the Independence Lions Club. For years, Marty helped coordinate the Independence Memorial Day Parade and was also instrumental in establishing the Veterans' Memorial at Independence Cemetery and the Memorial Oaks Project.
His son, Mark Nie, preceded him in death in 1975.
Survivors include his wife (of 54 years) Mary Jane Feldmann Nie; daughters, Kathy (Mark) Barth of Florence and Sharon (John) Lang of Alexandria; son, Jack (Becky) Nie of Independence; sisters, Lois Schreck of Edgewood and Estelle "Pinky" Morgan of Florence; brother, David C. Nie of Munfordville, KY; seven grandchildren, Jeremy and Greg Barth, Theresa, Julie, and Sarah Lang; and Mark John Nie and Sam Nie; and great grandson, Evan Paul Barth.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at St. Cecilia Church, 5313 Madison Pike, Independence, KY 41051. An American Legion prayer service will be held Sunday, beginning at 5:30 p.m., at the church. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 12 noon at the church. Interment will be at Mother of God Cemetery in Latonia, KY.
