Of my years at Dixie, my fondest memories are of, Mrs. Combs' home Economics classes. I have always enjoyed cooking and baking, but Mrs. Combs taught us jelly making, canning and freezing. I now live in Scottsdale, AZ where I get teases for my skills, but I love having these tools to help my family budget and save money. Sewing was a challenge, but Mrs. Combs hung I there with me and I made a vest that she actually got me to wear even if it was for a grade. I have continued sewing and now make quilts to be auctioned by my kids school P.T.A. as fundraisers. It has been said that teachers touch the future. I know Mrs. Combs has touched mine. I can only hope I can pass the skills she taught to my children. Thank you Mrs. Combs, for sharing your love of homemaking, so patiently with so many. Sincerely, Gwen Walker

Mrs. Combs was my Home Ec teacher at Dixie in 1979-80. She had such a calm and welcoming presence, I think she put everyone at ease. I remember she was teaching us to sew. The girl next to me was getting so frustrated she was threatening to throw the sewing machine out onto Dixie Highway. Now this was a tough girl. She was physically trying to pick it up, and I had no doubt it was going out the window. I was actually scared. Mrs. Combs came over and calmly asked the girl, in her sweet voice with a hint of southern drawl, how she could help. Mrs. Combs was never rattled and handled the whole situation so well. The girl learned to sew and the machine stayed in the room. I think she taught us all so much more than cooking and sewing, she taught us how to be ladies. My sympathies go to her family.

Mrs. Combs taught me Home Economics, at Dixie Heights High School, in 1981. I was a new student (my Junior year) and she was one of the teachers that really made me feel welcome. She always enjoyed teaching us to cook and sew. One of my favorite memories of her is when we planned the "mock wedding". I was chosen to be the "bride" and she had so much fun with helping plan out the big event. Mrs. Combs always made class FUN. She was a great teacher and someone you could always talk to if you needed her. I feel very fortunate to have her teach me so many things that I will never forget! God bless her family!
