Obituary of Maurice Warner Smith
Maurice W. Smith, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at his home in Bean Station, Tennessee. He was born in Bluefield, WV on September 5, 1935 to the late Maurice Edward and Pauline Smith (Farmer), Springville, VA.
Survivors include his son Leslie Heath Smith, daughter-in-law Wendy Dawn Smith, grandson Jacob Tanner Smith, and granddaughter Madison Marie Smith, brother Frank G. Smith (Francis) Bluefield, WV, sister, Mrs. Ray A. Nash (Barbara), Bluefield, VA, Mr. and Mrs. Garland J. Kidd (Sandra), Roanoke, VA, Mrs. Robert A. Burton (Judy), Salem, VA and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Norma June Smith (Diller), brothers-in-law, Mr. Ray A. Nash and Mr. Robert A. Burton, nephews Timothy A. Nash, Alexander C. Kidd, niece Amanda Lahti, and sister-in-law Margaret M. Diller.
He retired, after 36 years, from the commercial banking business. He served as a “TI” (Tactical Instructor) in the U.S. Airforce. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corp Reserves, Portsmouth, OH, while in high school. He graduated from the Minford High School, Minford, OH, class of 1954 and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University, NJ in 1973. His favorite things to do were spend time with his family. Hobbies included woodworking, hunting, “smallmouth bass” fishing at Dale Hollow lake, TN, and watching the boats at Cherokee Lake.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2021 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, 11382 Madison Pike Independence, KY 41051. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, face masks are required, social distancing is encouraged, and 60% capacity will be limited at the funeral home. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Following the service, Maurice will be laid to rest at Independence Cemetery.
