She was born in Walton, KY on August 14, 1927, the daughter of the late Kenneth and Susie Stamper. Helen was a longtime and faithful member of Walton United Methodist Church, 81 years to be exact. From teaching Sunday School to being the VBS Superintendent every summer, Helen was always actively participating in her church. She arranged countless plays and parties for the church. Helen started out as a telephone operator at Consolidated Telephone. In the 1950’s, she began selling Stanley Home Products for the next 22 years of her life.
Following this endeavor, Helen, who had a passion for flowers, opened her own flower shop in Dry Ridge, KY, called Flowers by Burgess in 1975. After that, she transitioned into a lunch lady for Dry Ridge Elementary and Grant County Middle School and for the next 23 years served and fed countless children in the Grant County area. Aside from her careers and her church, Helen was also part of several organizations such as the Rosie Reds, D.A.R. of Williamstown and the Brownie Scouts as a Master. In her down time, Helen often liked to go antiquing or fishing with her late husband. Her greatest joy, however, came from traveling this great nation of ours, particularly when she went to Walt Disney World.
